Prashant Bikram Malla, CAN secretary, resigns over Nepal T20 League controversy

File: Prashant Bikram Malla Kathmandu, February 1 Prashant Bikram Malla, the acting secretary of the national cricket governing body, Cricket Association of Nepal ( CAN ), has resigned from his position over the Nepal T20 League controversy. Malla submitted his resignation to the central meeting of the association currently underway in Pokhara, informs a member. Earlier, seven members of the 19-member committee had demanded the resignation of Malla among five top officials including CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand. Besides holding a press conference to demand the resignation in Kathmandu, the members also submitted their demand to Chand during the meeting yesterday. Malla chaired the governing council of the Nepal T20 League which has been mired in controversy over charges of spot-fixing . Using ATMs of other banks: Up to Rs 15 per transaction from now onwards

Representational file image: Using ATM Kathmandu, January 31 The central bank of Nepal says banks and financial institutions from now onwards charge up to Rs 15 per transaction for using ATMs of other banks to withdraw money from the accounts at other banks. Previously, the rate was Rs 20 at a maximum per transaction after two free transactions. In Nepal Rastra Bank ‘s new Integrated Directive on Payment, however, there is no provision for any free transactions while using other banks’ ATMs. It means the customers will be charged even if they just use other banks’ devices even once. Meanwhile, the central bank also increased the maximum limit on digital transactions . Bhagiram Tharu (56), a resident of Baijanath rural municipality-2 of the neighbouring Banke district, died when his motorbike (Bhe 4 Pa 5176) crashed in Bansgadhi municipality -5 after he lost control of the vehicle. A meeting of the election commissioners made a decision on Monday. President Bidya Devi Bhandari is due to retire on March 13, and her successor is being elected four days in advance. Meanwhile, the commission also decided to hold the vice presidential election on March 17, one day before incumbent Nanda Bahadur Pun retires. The 2015 constitution has a provision of electing the president and vice president through an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of the federal parliament and all seven provincial assemblies. The weights of votes of federal and provincial lawmakers are different. Bhandari and Pun were elected to the top state positions in March 2018. 3 killed in Kathmandu road accidents

Two persons died in a taxi-car collision in Gwarko of Lalitpur in the wee hours of Monday. The victims have been identified as Saroj Kumar BK (47), a resident of Talchhikhel in Lalitpur, who was in the taxi, and Dhan Bahadur Basnet (35), a resident of Morang and currently residing in Kathmandu, who was in the car. Seriously injured in the accident, they were rushed to the B and B Hospital , where they breathed their last during treatment. Meanwhile, six people have sustained injuries and one of them is critical. In another case, a 22-year-old woman died after being hit by a bus in Gaushala of Kathmandu. 53% of applicants fail recent doctors’ licence test

Photo: Pexels/ Klaus Nielsen Kathmandu, January 30 Nearly 53 per cent of the applicants failed the country’s doctors’ licence test held last weekend. Nepal Medical Council , the regulatory agency of medical professionals, says 2,311 applicants attended the tests held until Sunday. But, only, 1,091 people passed, according to the council registrar Dr Krishna Adhikari. While 1,220 failed, 10 were absent. Among the MBBS graduates, the pass percentage is 47.11 per cent whereas, among the BDS graduates, it is 47.6 per cent. In the test held in September 2022, nearly 58 per cent of the applicants failed the doctors’ licence test. Banke man immolates 2-yr-old son, injures wife

Kathmandu, January 30 A two-year-old child died after his father set him on fire by pouring petrol over his body, in Shaktinagar, Kohalpur municipality -2 of the Banke district on Sunday evening. Bhanu Bhakta BK set his wife Ganga and son Prince on fire with an intention of killing them at around 5 pm yesterday before running away from the site towards India, according to local police. As the Cricket Association of Nepal ( CAN ) announced a 28-member preliminary squad for a tri-series against Namibia and Scotland under the ICC World Cup Cricket League 2 on Friday, Desai began coaching them at the TU cricket ground, Kirtipur. As the appointment process got entangled in a complicated bureaucratic procedure taking a longer than expected time, CAN decided to begin working with him as an expert for now. Gulmi, January 29 A woman has been found dead in her house in mysterious circumstances in the Musikot municipality -7 in the Gulmi district of Lumbini. Police have suspected murder. The District Police Office has identified the deceased as Ganga Devi Sherchan (57), who used to stay alone in her house and operate an eatery there. The entrance to the house was locked when the body was found on Sunday morning. Earlier locals had informed the local police after they saw her lying behind the entrance, with her hands and legs tied with a tape. Two days after the Supreme Court removed him from the parliament and cabinet for failing to re-activate the citizenship after renouncing the United States citizenship upon his arrival back from the US a few years back, Lamichhane went to the Kathmandu District Administration Office on Sunday morning to obtain the citizenship. The verdict reads that Lamichhane was not qualified to contest the House of Representatives election as he did not take initiative to obtain a Nepali citizenship after renouncing his American citizenship. CAN recommends Monty Desai as Nepal cricket coach

Monty Desai Kathmandu, January 27 The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has nominated Monty Desai to be the new coach of the men’s national team. CAN has sent the file recommending Desai to be the head coach to National Sports Council (NSC). But the file has not been sent to the Sports Ministry which needs to give CAN approval to hire him. The position of head coach has been vacant after  Manoj Prabhakar resigned  as the head coach of the men’s cricket team following a series of poor results. With the team due to play a home series of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 in two weeks, no head coach means the team are yet to be called to a closed camp. “We have chosen the right candidate and it is up to the NSC and ministry to do its job,” says CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand stating the board was worried about the team’s recent performances in League 2. 42 families displaced in Bajura earthquake

A house collapsed due to an earthquake in Bajura of fat-west Nepal on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Bajura, January 27 A total of 42 families have been displaced by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Bajura on Tuesday. According to DSP Surya Bahadur Thapa, 12 families from Himali rural municipality and 15 each from Gaumul rural municipality and Badimalika municipality were displaced due to the earthquake. According to the District Police Office, Bajura, many houses have suffered partial damage while others have been completely damaged. Some government buildings in the district have developed cracks due to the earthquake. Several private houses have also developed cracks and suffered broken walls. The mud and stone houses have cracked and are unfit for accommodation, said DSP Surya Thapa.
