File image: Economist Swarnim Wagle Kathmandu, April 25 Rastriya Swatantra Party’s candidate Swarnim Wagle has won the House of Representatives by-election in Tanahun 1 held on Sunday. As per the results published by the voting officials in the wee hours of Tuesday, the famed economist garnered 34,919 votes, which is 14,797 more than his closest rival Govinda Bhattarai of the Nepali Congress. Bhattarai was restricted to 20,122 votes. This is considered a big loss to the House’s biggest party, Nepali Congress, for two reasons. Firstly, Wagle, until a month ago, was a Nepali Congress cadre who defected to the populist RSP just on the eve of the candidacy announcement, saying the old party’s leadership tried to corner him. Secondly, Tanahun 1 was the seat of the veteran Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel, who had to resign as a lawmaker after being elected as the president of the country . Photo: Shivata Love Foundation Kathmandu, April 24 Shivata Love Foundation organised an art exhibition titled Shivata-28 that began on Saturday at MCube Gallery, Patan. The exhibition is led by veteran artist Ragini Upadhayay Grela , also the founder and president of the foundation. In the opening ceremony, she said the organisation is working to fulfil the dreams of “many Shivatas”. In 2016, she formed a foundation in honour of her daughter Shivata, who passed away from meningitis B at 20. The organisation’s goals include promoting education for impoverished children, particularly those who live in poverty, as well as other social and philanthropic initiatives. File: Lumbini Chief Minister Lila Giri Dang, April 24 Following Gandaki, the neighbouring Lumbini province also recorded the fall of the CPN-UML-led government on Monday as Chief Minister Lila Giri could not prove the majority support in the Provincial Assembly. During a vote held in the assembly in Dang today, Giri received 33 votes, 11 short to prove that he commands the majority in the legislative body. Besides 29 lawmakers of the UML, four of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party voted in his favour. Giri was elected the chief minister in January following the elections in November 2022. He  could not rule long  following a  change in the federal-level coalition , following which the CPN-Maoist Centre in the province withdrew its support from the government, hence requiring Giri to face the test. File: The Mahakali river in the Darchula section, bordering India Dhangadhi, April 23 The Darchula district in Sudurpaschim has once again reported the death of a local following a tuin fall. For want of bridges, locals in remote parts of the district have been forced to use a makeshift cable crossing, locally known as tuin, to cross the mighty Mahakali river bordering Nepal and India. Many regions of the district are dependent on adjacent Indian places for daily consumables. Consequently, death and disappearance after tuin falls are also reported almost every year. While crossing a tuin, Singdal Singh Bhandari, a man in his mid-40s from Dumling, Byas rural municipality 2 of the district, fell into the river and drowned, according to ward chair Dhiran Singh Budha.
