The Dhanusha District Court on Friday pronounced sentences for three people convicted of murdering environmental conservation activist Dilip Mahato.

Mahato, a local of Mithila municipality-5 of the district, was murdered in 2020 after he tried to stop traders from mining sand and aggregates from the nearby Aurahi stream.

A tipper (Na 7 Kha 6413) that the traders had brought to fetch the sand ran over him.

Whereas the court convicted Bipin Mahato, Jitendra Mahato and Munindra Mahato last week after several hearings over more than two years, the durations of the sentences were said to be decided today.

Accordingly, the court today decided that Bipin and Munindra would be given life sentences as they were the main culprits whereas Jitendra would be given a 12.5-year sentence as he was the accomplice.

Bipin and Munindra will have to pay Rs 500,000 in compensation to the family each whereas Jitendra will have to contribute Rs 250,000.

Govt to classify taxis into 3 categories

File photo The government is set to classify taxis available for domestic services into three categories. According to the draft of the Standards for Vehicles Used as Taxis, 2023 issued by the Departm e nt of Transport Management , the taxis will be classified as ordinary, deluxe and luxury based on their characteristics like size, accommodation capacity and available facilities. The Department has sought public submissions on the draft via its email or Facebook page by June 19. Ordinary taxies should be a minimum of 800 ccs or more. If it is an electric taxi, the minimum power-to-weight ratio should be 0.012. Such taxis should have a sound system for entertainment with speakers fitted in the front and rear. Deluxe taxis should be a minimum of 1,200 cc or more. If it is an electric taxi, the minimum power-to-weight ratio is set at 0.019. 1 murdered in Kathmandu during Indra Jatra celebrations

Image for representation only Kathmandu, October 3 A teenager, observing Indra Jatra , has been murdered on Monday. Police said 17-year-old Shani Karki of Okhaldhunga was stabbed with a sharp object. SP Kumud Dhungel said Karki was stabbed in the chest. “He died during treatment,” said Dhungle. The reason for the attack is unknown but police have arrested two people on suspicion.
