Extreme heat shuts public schools in Sunsari

All public schools in Inaruwa municipality have been asked to shut for a week from June 1 to 7, said the mayor Kedar Bhandari. He said the decision was taken to give respite to the students as the temperature in the area was rising in excess of 40 degrees Celsius. Similarly, Bhokraha Narsingh rural municipality has directed public schools to shut for six days from June 1 to 6, and schools in Itahari sub-metropolitan city have been asked to close for two days on June 1-2. The accident took place near Rapti Sonari rural municipality on Tuesday afternoon when a car (Ba 13 Cha 8253) collided with a bus (Be 1 Kha 3335). The deceased have been identified as Dr Sanju Khati Khadka from Rupandhehi and Subas Adhikari from Gorkha. The two were rushed to Kohalpur Medical College where they breathed their last. Six people on the bus were injured in the accident. The bus driver has been arrested by the police. Mother and son fall to death from a cliff in Dhading

Apsara Chepang, 19, and her two-year-old son Sajan died after falling from the cliff. Dhading police said the incident happened when Apsara went to cut grass on the cliff on Monday. The government has increased the customs and excise duty up to 15 per cent on entry-level electric cars, jeeps and vans, which are in high demand and are in use in Nepal. The Finance Ministry has reduced taxes on mid-ranged EVs while it has not significantly increased taxes on high-end EVs. Number of foreign workers in Nepal on the decline

In eight months of the ongoing fiscal year 2022/23, 741 foreigners have obtained work permits in Nepal. In the same time frame, 795 people have renewed their work permits. In the fiscal year 2021/22, the number of foreigners obtaining work permits was 950. In 2020/21, the number of foreigners who obtained the permit was 1,090 while in 2019/20, 1,608 people took work permits. 15.1 per cent population below poverty line in Nepal

According to the Economic Survey 2022/23, 15.1 per cent of the population is below the poverty line, and a majority of them living in rural areas of the country. This is an improvement from 2018/19 when 17.4 per cent of the population was below the poverty line. The survey said 28 per cent of the population in rural areas was experiencing multidimensional poverty . In urban areas, that ratio was low as 12.3 per cent of the population faced multidimensional poverty. In Karnali, 39.5 per cent of the population faced multidimensional poverty while in Bagmati, only 7 per cent of the population faced multidimensional poverty. Kathmandu, May 28 The Melamchi Water Supply Project has started to look for alternative water sources for the project. The project, with consultants from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has started searching for new water sources. The project is planning to construct the new headwork for the project in a geographically less challenging place. A massive flood in June 2021 severely damaged the infrastructure  of the Melamchi project. Rajendra Pant, the director and spokesperson of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, says that an ADB team is looking for a new water source and is working on the design based on it. “We are looking for a water source in a place higher than the current one. US Embassy’s Summer Movie Series resumes

The series resumed on Thursday when the embassy screened Hollywood blockbuster Dune at QFX Labim Mall. With the resumption of the series, the US Embassy in Nepal says movies will be screened every fourth Thursday of each month. The movie screenings are free. US Embassy officials with Nepali filmmaker Ashok Sharma. As part of the cultural exchange programme, the embassy has been screening films on human rights, democracy, science, society, politics, etc. It has previously conducted a hip-hop dance-training workshop. Yuna Darnal of Sabhapokhari rural municipality-1 was murdered by Nandaram Gadal, 23, of Sabhapokhari rural municipality, DSP Birendra Godar said. Police said that Gadal attempted to die by suicide after murdering Darnal. Gadal is currently receiving treatment at Khandbari District Hospital.
