Rice and paddy imports drop in Nepal

Rice: The staple food of Nepal Kathmandu, June 30 Rice and paddy imports in Nepal have decreased by a large amount in the current fiscal year. Government data reveals a decrease of around 400 million kilograms in the import of paddy and rice during the fiscal year 2022/23. This has saved the country around Rs 16.1 billion. Up to mid-June of the current financial year, Nepal has imported paddy and rice Rs 29.19 billion. Last year, the country imported paddy and rice worth Rs 45.29 billion as 1.08 billion kilograms of rice and paddy had been imported by the country. Special Court finds former NOC director Gopal Bahadur Khadka guilty

File – Gopal Bahadur Khadka Kathmandu, June 30 The Special Court has found the former executive director of Nepal Oil Corporation , Gopal Bahadur Khadka , guilty. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority , in 2019, had filed a corruption case against Khadka accusing him of amassing disproportionate assets worth more than Rs 180 million. Khadka had been accused of embezzling millions while procuring land for setting up fuel storage facilities in various districts outside Kathmandu and had been facing accusations of accumulating property without known legal sources in the course of his tenure in government service. The CIAA, in 2019, stated Khadka’s valid income was Rs 86.4 million whereas his expenditure and investment were worth Rs 273 million. He resigned from his position following those allegations. Govt drafts bills aiming to regulate e-commerce businesses in Nepal

The Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supply Ramesh Rijal has registered a bill to regulate e-commerce business in the National Assembly on June 27. Minister Rijal has stated that the bill has been presented with the objective of legitimising online business activities and subjecting them to taxation regulations. According to officials of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply, the e-commerce businesses confined within the bill’s scope include advertising, movies, television, music, OTT, data collection, cloud services, gaming, mobile apps, online markets, software supply, data, image download services, education, consulting, skill development and training services, e-books, e-libraries, e-magazines among others. Koshi: CM Hikmat Kumar Karki ousted after failing vote of confidence test

Hikmat Kumar Karki Biratnagar, April 23 Koshi province ‘s Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki was removed from his position after failing to secure the vote of confidence from the Provincial Assembly in a ballot conducted in Biratnagar on Friday. Only 46 of the 93-member assembly voted in favour of Karki of the UML. Karki was elected the chief minister in January following the elections in November 2022. He needed at least 47 votes to remain in his position. Only 89 members were present during voting. After a change in the federal-level coalition , Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki’s tenure was cut short. The CPN-Maoist Centre in the province withdrew its support from the government, leading to the necessity for Karki to undergo the vote of confidence. In light of potential damage to the forest tracks, flooding of small streams within the jungle, road obstructions caused by fallen trees, and the risk of human casualties during the monsoon season, the park has implemented a ban on jungle safaris. 22 rhinos died in Chitwan in the past year

Sketch for representation only Chitwan, June 29 Twenty-two rhinos died in Chitwan National Park this fiscal year. The park reports that among them, 20 individuals died due to natural causes, while two were killed by poachers. Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, the park’s information officer, said in the fiscal year 2018/19, 43 rhinos died from natural causes . In the years since then, the number of rhinos dying due to natural causes has been decreasing. Tiwari said the rhinos died in Chitwan due to old age, tiger attacks, crocodile attacks, injuries, entanglement and electrocution. He further noted that the implementation of effective grassland and water management practices within the park likely contributed to a decrease in the mortality rate, as the rhinos were less inclined to venture outside the park’s boundaries. The deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Tika Sunar. Sunar was critically injured when the bike (Karnali Province 02-001 Pa 4791), which was going from Ghantaghar to Shankarchowk, hit him. Lalit Niwas land case: Court remands 4 in custody for 7 days

The Kathmandu District Court has granted permission to detain the four accused individuals for a period of seven days. They were arrested on charges of forging government documents with the intention of illegally acquiring land in Lalita Nivas in Baluwatar. The truck (Province 1-02-001 Ka 3879) coming from the west hit a car (Province 1-01-00 Cha 7482). The deceased have been identified as Guruchan Chaudhary and his daughter Kumkum Chaudhary. The two were critically injured and were taken to B&C Hospital in Birtamod for treatment where they breathed their last. Five others were injured in the accident and are being treated at B&C Hospital. Lalit Niwas land case: CIB arrest 5 for their involvement

Kathmandu, June 27 The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has started investigating the  Lalit Niwas land case again. The investigation into the case, which was halted for a year and a half due to the intervention of the Attorney General, has resumed. As part of the ongoing proceedings, the police have arrested Min Bahadur Gurung, the owner of the Bhatbhateni department store and four government officials involved in the case. Gurung is believed to be one of the key planners in the case. According to sources at CIB, Kaladhar Deuja, Surendraman Kapali, Dharma Prasad Gautam and Bhupendra Mani KC have been arrested. Deuja is the former head of the Dillibazar Land Revenue Office. KC was an official at the Dillibazar Land Revenue Office and was even hired as a land expert by the Commission Abuse of Authority Investigation. Gautam and Kapali are also government officials. Min Bahadur Gurung Kathmandu, June 27 Min Bahadur Gurung, the chair and managing director of Bhat-Bhateni Group , the largest retail chain of supermarkets in Nepal, has been arrested. Gurung, a suspect in the Lalit Niwas land case , was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) team of Nepal Police from his residence in Naxal. He was granted bail by a special court in 2021 for Rs 20 million in relation to a case involving government land. The CIB is currently investigating the case. 4 wooden artefacts to be repatriated from Australia

Kathmandu, June 26 Four pieces of wooden artefacts are being brought back to Nepal from Australia. Wooden artefacts crafted by Nepali artists before the 20th century found their way to the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra through various channels. The gallery has handed it over to the Nepali Embassy which is now starting the process to send it back to Nepal. The National Gallery has handed over three different-sized torans that were part of a carving above the main entrance of the temples. There is also one wooden sculpture with different gods carved into it. Saugat Singh, Executive Director of Sangrila Cargo, which is bringing them back to Nepal, informed that the total weight of the artefact is 26 kg. The artefact will be kept at the Department of Archeology. Dipesh Gurung, 22, and Dipen Limbu, 38, both drowned in a well in Arniko Marg in Kathmandu. Limbu, who had entered the well to retrieve a water pump, tragically drowned and called for assistance. Police say Hemanta Kumal, 36, of Kanchan rural municipality in Rupandehi, died after a micro van (Ba 3 Kha 9460) hit his motorbike (L3 93 Pa 946). Nepal lost to Mongolia 3-1 on June 18. In the second game, Nepal lost 3-1 against hosts Kyrgyzstan on June 19. On June 20, Nepal lost to Iran in straight sets followed by a 3-1 defeat against Turkmenistan on June 22. Nepal also lost to Kyrgyzstan’s second team 3-2 on June 23. Heat wave imminent during monsoon warns NDRRMA

The authority has asked people to stay alert as a heat wave is imminent during the monsoon. It did say the heat wave will be shorter compared to the pre-monsoon period. Anil Pokhrel, the chief executive officer of the Authority, predicts below-average rainfall and hotter days than usual for this monsoon season. L-R: Bijay Limbu and Samikshya Rai Bijay Limbu and Samikshya Rai won the sixth National Skateboard Championship on Saturday at Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) in Ravi Bhawan, Kathmandu. Limbu and Rai won the freestyle street best run category, male and female respectively.  In an event organised by Nepal Skating and Skateboarding Organisatio n Basant Rai and Gajendra Bardewa came second and third respectively in the men’s category. Similarly, in the women’s category, Swati Shrestha came second and Arlin Lama came in third. The top three finishers in both male and female categories received cash prizes of  Rs 20,000, 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.  The prizes were awarded by lawmaker Sobita Gautam and the president of the organisation Achyut Khanal.   A total of 190 skaters participated in the competition .
